I served as a Mass Communications Specialist for ten years in the US Navy. While in the Navy I had a chance to travel the world and document history while serving the country. During my military career I studied in several media schools including photography, design, maintenance, and advanced design.
After leaving the Navy I started a media production company that specializes in photography, print design, and web design. Larry Hess Design has produced several websites that are active today using the top content management systems and integrating social media, mobile compatibility, and analytics. I have an Associate in Applied Business in Technical Support, a Bachelor of Information Technology in Visual Information/Media, and I am currently finishing up a Masters of Educational Technology at Ohio University.
Today I can be found working as an Instructional Technologist II within Ohio University. My main activity for OU is engaging faculty within the course development process to ensure that all technical aspects are possible and managed properly, including middle and high-fidelity simulators, audio-visual equipment, computers, and instructional design methodology/technology. I also provide technical guidance to the faculty by remaining knowledgeable of the vision, mission, and daily operational needs of the university, attending faculty/staff meetings to develop and maintain an understanding of the information technology and management needs of the faculty. I am constantly evaluating operational needs, projects, issues, initiatives, and recommending technology-based solutions that help the faculty and staff achieve goals while improve ongoing college operations. Some of my interests in instructional technology are using video to teach, flipping the classroom, quality matters, and using mixed media in the classroom. I have spoke on Apps in Education and iBooks Author at two national level tech conferences.
